Happy Dead Birthday
There was a vase of dead posies on the mantelpiece in the Day room today, under the painting of Magritte’s ‘The Red Model.’ This is the second version of the painting, which shows the frame of the original. Rene gave it me when I rescued his dog from blue spiders in 1938. I think Harold must have put the flowers there for the painter’s birthday.
Rene would have approved of the gesture. “Ha!” he would have said. “They are not flowers.”
It’s a pity he died. He would have loved the ambiguity of the internet. Happy cake day, old fruit.
