Dead Rite chapter 99.10

“What about the people?” Dill flapped his arms. “All those people who won't go to Heaven?”

Harold raised an eyebrow. “I wouldn't have taken you for a believer in Religion. You seem to be of sterner stuff. A man of science and dealer in practicalities. Aren't the two mutually incompatible?”

“You'd think so, wouldn't you? What happens to angels dancing on the head of a pin when you can see the structure with an electron microscope?” Dill shook his head, a wry smile almost literally splitting his cheeks. “The God Squad would just say that angels can be as small as you can imagine. Smaller than atoms, even, and larger than the tallest skyscraper at the same time. I program computers for a living and that's probably as close to religion as it's possible to get without actually....you know...taking the cloth. I never gave any credence to the concept of Heaven or Hell or any of the thousands of other afterlifes. I think even Valhalla would get tedious after a week or two.”

“But you've changed your mind now?”

“Mostly. Being dead gives you a different perspective about the concept of an afterlife.”
