Dead Rite chapter 108.05

He led the way through the dimly lit quadrangle to the main doors and peered through the window. There was a light at the back of the receptionist's desk but no sign of anyone actually sitting there.

“There must be a security station somewhere.” Peters pressed his face against the glass, his hands clasped on either side of his head to cut out the ambient light. “I can't see anything from here.”

“Lets go around to the computer block. Maybe we'll have more luck there.”

“Makes sense, I suppose. You're more likely to get a break in where the prize is worth the effort. All there is here is a box of paperclips.”

“Can you remember the way?”

“I think so.” Peters pointed to an archway. “That way. There should be a grassy bit behind where we saw those dope heads.”

“Yes. Well done, Sergeant. Keen observation.” White went through the arch and across the grass to the door they'd used earlier. It was locked. “Bugger.”

“We'll have to go around, sir. The campus map outside the office is pretty clear. We just need to double back and take a couple of lefts.”

“Where's campus security, that's what I want to know.” White led them back to the office and consulted the board with the campus map. He traced the route with his finger and looked along the line of concrete wall. “We just need to take a couple of lefts.”

“That's what I said.” Peters fished a micro torch from his pocket and shone it at the building. “That's odd.”

“What is?”

“There are CCTV cameras all over the place but I don't think they're on.”

“Why wouldn't they be?”

“I don't know, sir. I think there's something very wrong here.”
