Dead Rite chapter 109.06

He checked his watch. It was a shade off five a.m. And probably too early to call DC Acton to check on the dog. He called the station and requested uniformed officers to secure the scene, an ambulance for the night watchman and scene-of-crime unit to gather evidence from the computer room. He hesitated when he thought of issuing a 'Be On the Lookout For' on the robot. It might well make him a laughing stock at the station. He ended the call and returned to the night watchman.

“Can I take your name and address, sir?”

“Why? Have I done something wrong?”

“No, sir. The ambulance is on its way and I'll need to know where you live so that I can see to your dog.”

“Oh. Right. Edward Cotman. Fifteen, Beecham Road.”

“That's down by the goods yard, isn't it?”

“That's right. Near that new cemetery.”

“Splendid. And the dog?”

“He lives there too.”

“No, What's his name?”

“Oh. Toby. He's a big old mutt. Thank no notice of him biting you. He's only playing.”

“Good to know, sir. Thank you.”

White looked up at the sound of footsteps but it was Sergeant Peters, who shook his head. He bent over, hands on his knees as he caught his breath. “Sorry, sit. I lost him. He headed over the playing fields into the woods, heading east.”

“East, eh?” White frowned. “That's where we found the body yesterday.”
