Dead Rite chapter 116.05

“Have you not been listening? That's rather the point. In all the confusion of another world war Magelight will clean up on the military hardware contracts. By the time peace is declared again the world will be so battle-weary and depleted the company can take over the whole military.”

Gillian looked up from her inspection of the golems. “What would be the point?”

Dill looked at her. “What?”

“What would be the point of taking over the world? A company like Magelight exists to make money for its shareholders. A tiny, tiny percentage of it might be altruistic, certainly, because advancing the sum of human knowledge is good for business anyway but mortly it's to make money, yes?”

Dill glanced at Harold, who shrugged. He turned back to Gillian. “Yes, I suppose so.”

“Then what would be the point of taking over the world? If you rule the world, there's no military to buy your products. Worse, you become burdened with the arduous task of governing it, feeding and educating the people, protecting them from harm and so on. There's no profit in government. I can understand them starting a war, they stand to make an awful load of money from the contracts. More if they supply both sides. But wading in to take over afterwards? I just don't see it. It's far more likely that they'll manoeuvre to provide peacetime support. Computers for schools, mine cleaning equipment, farming machinery and so on.”

Harold nodded. He would have clapped Dill on the back but he was unsure how Sam would take the affection. “She makes a good argument.”
