Dead Rite chapter 121.07

He resumed his pace and headed into the house. White was left to follow on, collaring Peters as he went past. “There's a lady at the line about to appear with fourteen cups of tea. Make sure everyone gets a cup, would you?”

“Yes sir.” Peters motioned to the two constables at the door and moved them up to the police tape. He reappeared a moment later. “Are you officially the officer in charge, sir?”

White groaned. “As if I hadn't got enough to do. I suppose so, why?”

“There's a reporter and a cameraman appeared.”

“Good grief. Already?” White looked at his watch. “It's been fourteen minutes since the cavalry arrived. How did they get here so fast?”

“No idea, sir, but you might want to make an official statement. She's talking to the prossie now.”

“What prossie?”

“Miss Parkes.” He lowered hs voice. “Or Jubilee Janet as she's more widely known.”

“Why?”

“Give her a fifty and you'll find out, sir.” Peters winked.

“How do you know all this?”

“I was in uniform for four years, sir. There's not much I don't know about the community around here.”

“Right. I should take more notice of the report sheets going through.”

“It's easy enough, sir. Everything's logged into the computer system. I'll show you how to set up the report feed on your office terminal.”

“Oh joy. More paperwork to look forward to.”

“Technically it's a paperless system, sir, or it would be if you didn't have to fill out three sheets of paperwork before you input anything.”

White turned his nose up at the prospect. “Oh joy. Paperless paperwork. Stuff I can't even ball up and throw in the bin.”

Peters grinned. “I'm sure there'll be plenty of balls, sir.”
