Dead Rite chapter 133.10

“What are you lot whispering about?” Dill/Sam came stalking toward them the taser, thankfully, stuffed into his waistband like a seventeen-dollar gangsta. “Plotting?”

“Not at all, old chap.” Harold guided his toward the lift. “We were discussing a strategy toward achieving the disposal of Jim Hunt.”

“You want to kill him?”

“Well...” Harold looked back at Gillian and Jasfoup, who were following at a discrete distance. Lucy completely oblivious to both her surrounds and the increased tension. “As a last resort, perhaps. Magelight has always been fraught with trouble. It's what you get when toy meld science and magic, I suppose. They open a door to the supernatural but forget that along with the magic comes the original owners.”

“But he's been allowing demons free reign to possess the living while at the same time using the souls of the dead to power his creations.” He frowned. “Wait. Collecting souls to power magical artefacts? There was a computer game that predicted this.”

“There's nothing new under the sun. The Mayans used to do it too. People used to believe demons actually ate souls until the church disabused them of the notion.”

“That's good.”

“Good? No.” Harold clapped the zombie on the back, pleased it was Dill he was talking to rather than Sam. “Demons eating souls would imply an end to the suffering of Hell rather than eternal torment. Besides, if demons ate souls in Hell, what did angels do? Just why would God want people in Heaven so badly?”

“I don't know. Why?”

“Let me put it this way. If you had an enormous appetite for chicken, would you want them to run wild and only come to be eaten when they felt like it? Or woud you tell them 'It's horrible over there. Come over here where everything is delightful, and don't forget to baste yourselves on the way.”
