Dead Rite chapter 135.09

“I'm not sure what you're implying.”

“Clever kids are always the most disruptive in a class. It's like having an Olympic runner in a field full of toddlers and telling her she can't finish the race until all the toddlers have reached the finish line too. Your clever dick reads the syllabus, does the work and passes the test in the first week of term then has ten weeks of kicking their heels while the rest of the class catches up. What happens when they're bored?”

“They look for something to occupy themselves, obviously.” Harold glanced at Jasfoup, but the demon's expression was impassive. “Perhaps they read the next term's textbook.”

“Which only compounds the problem the following term. What happens then is that the other pupils see the brainy kid doing something different and resent the special treatment he gets.”

“Which encourages them to catch up, surely?”

“Which does the exact opposite. The other kids think 'Why bother, when she's getting all the attention?'”

“She?” Harold smiled. “You were a genius in your classroom, too?”

“No. Sandra Goodwin was. I was one of the thickies who dropped out of school as soon as I could and regretted it ever after.”

“Oh.” Harold's smile faded and he looked away, unable to meet her eyes. “What happened to her?”

“She was found dead in her room at Oxford. Suspected overdose, though they could never explain the lack of blood in her body.”
