Dead Rite chapter 137.07

“Yes, I get the point. Everyone needs influential connections.” Harold frowned, pointing to Jasfoup's actions. “What are you doing? Isn't that littering?”

“Not if you...” Jasfoup concentrated and a tiny portal opened in the brickwork, just large enough to take the balled-up plastic. “There.” He stood, brushing the mortar dust from his hands. “Not littering. Not here, anyway. Littering somewhere else almost certainly by it's someone else's problem now.”

“Where did it go?”

The demon shrugged. “I don't know. Wherever this tunnel passes through, I suppose.”

“Magelight, then? That would be logical, since we just left their research floor.”

“Possibly but not certainly. That's the nature of demon tunnels. They take the most direct route to the hub and while that probably correlates to physical locations it doesn't always follow.”

Harold shook his head, his eyebrows doing a good impression of a Newfoundland Puppy. “I don't understand.”

“It's very simple, Harold. Haven't you read Jibrail's Treatise of the Nature of the Planes of Existence? No, I can tell by your expression you haven’t. It's like this. Imagine if you want to go from the manor to your mum's house by road, but it's rush hour and the roads are jammed solid. Logically, you'd sit in traffic from A to B and your mum would make you a cup of tea when you eventually got there.”

“Well, she'd tell me to make it but yes, go on.”

“Now imagine there's an empty expressway that will get you to your mother's in half the time but take you via Darlington. Wouldn't you take it?”

“Well, no. There'd be the extra petrol to buy.”

“Assuming petrol was free.”

“Then yes, of course.”

“There you go. Demon tunnels are like that, only Darlington might be China, or Mississippi or even Stockton-on-Tees.”
