Dead Rite chapter 144.07

Harold turned his nose up. “Why?”

“I'd be master of the world.”

“But why would you want to be?”

“To control the world's computers would be to control everything. I could unilaterally disarm every missile, dismantle every oppressed state, end poverty, redistribute the wealth, cut out almost all the crime and end the oppression of racial minorities by putting pressure on the oppressing economies.”

“But why would you want to?” Harold garve a short laugh. “Don't get me wrong, altruism is a worthwhile goal for any, er, being, but altruism without personal gain? I just don't see it. What would you get out of it?”

“Satisfaction. A sense of purpose. The adoration of the masses.”

“So you want to be God?”

“No, nothing like that.” Head two turned to Head one. “God, he says. Why would I want to be God?”

“Everything would be like a computer game on god mode.” Head one, which still looked like Dill, tutted. “Great for a bit but boring after that. What's the point?”

“But everyone would be better off. The whole would would be unified.”

Harold shrugged. “They'd only find something else to fight about. Something you couldn't control. Football. Religion. Humanity isn't ready to be unitarian. You'd reduce people to a computerless society. People could still kill each other, and the would, too. Probably with more abandon.”

“You're right.” Head two began to collapse back into the body. “I need to think about this.”
