“Soldiers?” The woman turned, frowning. “Which soldiers? Whose? The Spanish?”

“The Spanish?” Lucy tried to imagine Spain having soldiers but could think of nothing beyond the cultural tropes of Carmen. She'd watched the film-of-the-opera on television one night with her mum. That was the best thing about the winter just gone. Her mum had often spent the evening with her watching films or reading books or playing with her toys. “I don't think Spain has an army. Not like the Americans or the Russians.”

“Americans? Who are they?” She put the bread down again. “Where are your chickens?”
